Mouthguards - why get a custom made one?

Regardless of the level of sport you're playing;  whether it's football, basketball, hockey or martial arts, never underestimate the importance of a custom made mouthguard; both at training AND on game day.  Think of a custom made mouthguard as an insurance policy to protect your valuable smile!  As dental professionals, we consider a properly fitting mouthguard possibly the most important piece of sporting equipment you will use.

Mouthguards act as a cushion to prevent teeth from hitting against each other, minimise the risk of serious soft tissue damage and provide protection to the bone that supports your teeth.  It also provides a barrier from foreign objects such as balls or bats. Mouthguards can be made in a variety of colours (including your team colours) and can be personalised with your name on.

Why get a custom made mouthguard rather than a “Boil & Bite” one?  “Boil and Bite” mouthguard are certainly cheaper, but simply don’t offer the same protection as a custom made mouthguard.  They are not nearly as comfortable to wear either and often fall out when you are talking.  When you have a mouthguard custom made, we will assess your teeth and will allow for (in the case of children) newly emerging teeth so that you get the most wear possible from your mouthguard.

We carefully take an accurate mould of your teeth to produce a model that replicates them, then a specialist technician is able to make a full coverage, double layered mouthguard. This is custom fitting, and will fit snugly over your upper teeth. Before we send you off and wish you luck for the sporting season, we will make sure your mouthguard fits perfectly and teach you about how to look after it.

Keeping your mouthguard clean will also help keep your mouth healthy.  Once you have worn your mouthguard at training or a game, you should remove it, rinse it and brush it with some mild soap and warm water (or use a denture cleaning tablet), rinse it again and allow it to air dry.

It is important to look after your mouthguard as it will need to make it through the whole season!
